Getting Started

Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research Computing (CRC)

To begin using CRC resources, new users need to set up a user account. This account is associated with your Pitt ID, and must be associated with a Faculty/PI Slurm allocation.

New User Accounts and Allocations for Faculty and Principle Investigators

All users need to be associated with an active faculty account. University Faculty can create an account and add an unlimited number of users - undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, and staff. Please submit this form to start the process of creating an account.

Your user group and allocation (slurm account) is associated with this account, and any requests for new users, additional service units, and additional storage space will need approval from this user.

This account and the basic resources that come with it are completely free to all Pitt faculty.

Compute Resources

The standard free allocation includes 10,000 service units for compute jobs on the clusters.

Requests for more computing time requires the submission of a proposal justifying the need.

Free allocation PIs will receive an e-mail before their annual renewal date asking them to submit DOIs for any publications that used CRC resources.

If account holders do not have any publications, they should submit a short description of the work they do with the CRC.

Storage Resources

The standard free storage resources include 75 GB Home directories for you and each of your users.

You can also request up to 5 TB of space for data on iX enterprise storage for free. Storage arrays have a built-in fault tolerance at RAID level 6 and are not backed up off-site. However, 7-day images are kept for these locations.

For storage beyond 5 TB there is a charge of $65-per-TB-per-year.

Use this form to request 5TB of free data storage or purchase storage.

New User Accounts for Students and Lab Staff

If you are an Undergraduate or Graduate student, Post-doc, Lab Manager, Research Specialist/Technician, etc, a faculty advisior or PI must sponsor your user on their allocation. The fastest method is to have them fill out  and submit the form to request a user account for you.

The various request forms throughout the website can currently be submitted by anyone with a Pitt ID, but will need approval from the PI.

If for some reason you can't have your faculty member sponsor submit the form above, you can use this webform to send us details and we will reach out on your behalf.

What if I need more computing time than 10,000 service units?
Faculty can submit a short proposal requesting more computing time. See the guidelines for proposals. Proposals must be submitted through this form and should include an attached. The portal page also offers a template for proposals and example of a successful proposal.
